This project was one of my favorites. The client was the book writer, and my main objective was to bring her world into images, for other children to enjoy as they “strolled” through her written adventures.
The Process
Scoping
On the first brief the client ran me trough what inspired her to write the book and her Vision for it. They were very set on watercolour as the medium, which was my main challenge.
New Ideas
The book was composed of many different independent stories with very bubbly characters with distinct personalities that gave me a clear idea of how they should look.
Timeline
The timeframe for the illustrations was of three months, I decided to dedicate one month to just fully master the watercolour while working on the sketches.
Initial meeting
My first meeting with the client was mainly about their inspiration for the stories and their main vision for it. We quickly gathered a mood board and I made some quick sketches to better understand which style suited them best.
The main obstacle for this project was that the writer wanted the medium to be watercolour when I was more experienced in digital art, so I started working on the books scenes while practicing with the medium to ensure the end result would be what the client wished.
Sketches
Once the client chose the style, it was the time to gather information on other children’s books to better understand the market and the ratio of Image to text.
At this stage I got to read the script while deciding which scenes to feature. Admittedly this was the most creative part of the process and personally the most fun.
Colouring
Most of the drawings came out exactly how the client envisioned them, and with their approval, I jumped to the next step and started colouring.
Final Product
Finally, the book was done and published. Unfortunately, I had no contact with the publisher while they were editing the book, and I found the image processing harsh on the work. Yet I felt satisfied with the challenge, especially after the Client’s love for it.
